Motor Control with VFD .....Variable Frequency Drive
Power Hammers
I have limited expierence using commercial power hammers such as Yoder or Pettingill and Metalcraft. I have noticed that the control of these machines by mechanical or hydraulic links to the cone, disc or slack belt clutches is often a subject of conversation.
When I began the design process for the Shopdog Power Hammers; I found a mechanical clutch to be a costly item whether purchasing a stock unit or manufacturing a custom clutch. Thus I explored the possibility of utilizing the many features of the VFDs I had used on the Shopdog reciprocating machines. The VFD provides all the control features a user might expect; plus the added convienience of placing the electronic footpedal anywhere the cord would reach. In addition the VFD provides singlr to three phase power conversion and superior motor fault and overload protection. Safety interlocks for gaurds and other features are easily accomodated.
Control of the hammer is infinite! I belt drive at a 2:1 ratio so maximum speed is 870 blows per minute. The VFD allows a easy choice of any speed from a single hit to full speed. The ability to precisely control the speed allows the power hammer to be used for planishing with the dies just kissing together. Foot pedal pressure is slight and constant as you are only depressing the pedal against a spring loading.
Below is a list of components used in the Shopdog powerhammer drive.
